Ramification
Medium: Sculpture, Video with sound.

The ramification is a piece about the sardine industry in Portugal, mainly the Ramirez canning factory, the oldest producer and exporter of preserved foods in Portugal and Europe (est. 1853). It traces the process of taking a sardine from the sea through the factory. The video, which was initially presented side by side with a can sculpture, also looks at the social, economic, environmental, political, and cultural effects of the sardine industry on Portugal and at the forces at work today to undermine this long-standing element of Portuguese life.
